For this interview assignment, I reached out and interviewed Tim Cigelske, the Director of Integrated Content at Marquette University. Specifically, he runs and manages Marquette’s social media presence on all platforms. I was able to speak with him and ask him a few questions with his answer below:
- What is your role?
Director of Integrated Content, overseeing the social media properties across university platforms.
- Where do you fit in in the organization?
I report to the Vice President of University Relations.
- How many people are there on your social media staff?
- How did you get to this position?
My background is in journalism — my undergrad is a journalism degree from Marquette. I worked at the Journal Sentinel before coming to Marquette in 2008 as a Communication Specialist. As social media grew, my role became more focused on digital communication.
- What is the best part of the job? The worst?
Best part of the job is being able to connect individually with students, parents and alumni and make a difference for them. The worst part is it’s a 24/7/365 job, and issues can arise suddenly at any hour of the day or night.
Overall I really liked this assignment because it pushed us out of our comfort zone to find and ask a professional in the social media field some interesting questions. I think I also learned that even though Marquette is a university, the job of promoting Marquette’s social media is still similar to how other companies promote themselves. The interview was short but I still feel I got some valuable information from it, and this class as a whole. His comment about the worst part of the job, being 24/7/365, stood out because you never know when something needs to be addressed and you need to be prepared to act at any given time.
